One of my goals this year is to read more. I have mixed several business books with some just-for-fun reading. I'm having a lot of fun with Jon Acuff's books, particularly "Stuff Christians Like."
Jon does a super job of helping Christians laugh at our Christian selves, while also touching on some very meaningful moments and truths. I recently ran across a Tweet he posted that completely impressed me. It said:
David didn't show up to fight Goliath.
He brought lunch.Stop looking for the dramatic and be great at the little things.
I love that! After days and weeks of doing the same little things over and over, one turn of the corner can produce a Goliath. And in the middle of folding towels, cooking taco meat, and planting a kiss on my husband, I can be ready.
I believe all those seemingly mundane acts are like weight lifting. We just keep doing it and don't realize how much difference it makes until we meet great requirement. When we've been faithful to keep doing the small things, we're "in shape," we're ready.
I remember in the Old Testament, Abigail tries to plead for King David to spare her husband's life. She "whips together" a mule train filled with goods and treks cross-country to find David and head him off at the pass. I don't know about you, but I can whip together a pbj, not a mule train full! I've always admired her readiness and organization.
Just keep doing what you're doing. Do it well. Do it faithfully. There is a reward. Stay the course. Never give up. You'll be ready when the Goliaths require more.
