I've noticed something. Listening is a big deal.
For some reason, in the past three days, I've encountered at least three people who needed to be heard. I've had to bite my tongue and make myself wait, while one heart after another poured out through their story, often with tears.
None of them really needed my advice. Each aching heart just needed room to voice their pain or frustration to an understanding ear.
Friends have been very good about listening to me when I need it. I regret that I've not always offered the same gift. I like to think of myself as a compassionate person, but I know I get impatient. I just want to hurry up and fix things instead of allowing each heart to speak, cry, wonder, or process.
Everyone needs to be heard. Everyone deserves to be heard. If we take the time... no, make the time to genuinely listen, I'm convinced that life is imparted to both speaker and listener, but only if the listener truly listens.
For those who have listened to me--thank you.
To those who need to speak--I'm listening.
You're both needed.
